Christmas Gonks
For most people, Christmas feels like it belongs to the final weeks of the year. The lights go up, the decorations appear, and suddenly everything feels festive.

But behind the scenes, Christmas starts much earlier than that.

At this time of year, while January is still settling in, we are already deep in Christmas planning. In fact, our Christmas 2026 orders need to be confirmed by the beginning of February.

That means now is one of the most important times of the year for us.

It is a season of travel, inspiration, decision making and a lot of festive imagination.

Travelling for Christmas Inspiration

Early in the year, we travel across the UK and to Germany to meet with suppliers, view collections and discover what is coming next in the world of Christmas décor.

These trips are about far more than placing orders. They are about inspiration.

Seeing decorations in person allows us to understand scale, texture, colour and impact. It helps us picture how something might look not just on a shelf, but in a space. A home, a business, a venue or a public setting.

This is where ideas begin to form.

The Magic of Christmas in Germany

There is something truly special about experiencing Christmas inspiration in Germany.

Even outside of the festive season, there is a deep sense of tradition and craftsmanship woven into the designs.

From hand finished ornaments to large scale statement pieces, there is a strong focus on quality and storytelling. Decorations are not just decorative. They are designed to create atmosphere and emotion.

Walking through showrooms and supplier spaces in Germany is a reminder of why Christmas feels so magical. Every detail is considered. Every piece has a purpose.

It is impossible not to be inspired.

Planning Far in Advance

Many people are surprised to learn just how early Christmas planning happens.

Orders for Christmas 2026 need to be placed by early February. That might sound far away, but the production timelines, shipping schedules and demand for the most popular pieces mean decisions have to be made now.

This early preparation allows us to:

Secure the best designs before they sell out
Plan collections thoughtfully rather than last minute
Match specific styles to specific clients
Ensure quality and consistency across displays

Planning ahead is what allows Christmas to feel effortless later on.

Matching Décor to People and Places

One of the things we love most about this stage of the year is connecting ideas to people.

As we walk through displays and collections, we are often already picturing where something would work best. Certain colours, textures or styles naturally suit certain spaces and personalities.

A classic look might suit a heritage building. A bold, modern design might be perfect for a contemporary business. A whimsical display might be just right for a family focused environment.

Very often, we see a piece and instantly know the perfect location for it.

That is where the real magic happens.

From Showroom to Real Life

Seeing decorations in a showroom is just the beginning.

The real work comes in imagining how that piece will live in a real environment. How it will be seen. How people will interact with it. How it will feel in daylight and at night.

This is why visiting suppliers in person is so important. It allows us to make informed choices that go beyond trends.

It is not about following fashion for the sake of it. It is about creating Christmas displays that feel right for the space and the people who experience them.

Why Early Preparation Matters

Starting early does not take away from the magic of Christmas. If anything, it enhances it.

Because the planning is done calmly and carefully, the festive season itself becomes more enjoyable. There is space to focus on atmosphere, experience and joy rather than stress.

For our clients, early planning means:

More choice and better availability
A display that feels considered and personal
Less pressure as December approaches
A Christmas that truly reflects their style

Preparation is what allows the magic to shine.

Christmas Is Built on Detail

What makes Christmas special is rarely one single thing. It is the combination of small details working together.

Lighting, colour, texture, scale and placement all play a role. The early months of the year are when those details are chosen.

This is when ideas are formed, refined and brought together into something cohesive.

It is a creative process that starts long before the first decoration is unboxed.

Looking Ahead With Excitement

While most people are easing into the new year, we are already looking ahead to future Christmas seasons with excitement.

Travelling, discovering new ideas and planning ahead is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. It allows us to stay inspired and ensure every Christmas we help create feels special.

Christmas may come once a year, but the work behind it never really stops.

And that is exactly how we like it.

Three Counties Christmas

This blog was put together by Three Counties Christmas. A husband-and-wife team based in the Cotswolds, leading a small, dedicated group of designers and installers who live and breathe Christmas.

Each year, we work closely with homes, businesses and public spaces across Stroud, Cirencester and Cheltenham to create festive displays that feel both magical and meaningful. We’re hands-on from start to finish, and building lasting relationships with our clients is at the heart of everything we do.

If you’d like to chat about your Christmas decorating plans, whether for your home, business or somewhere in between, you can get in touch with us here. We’d love to hear from you.
